Abstract

This study aims to uncover counter-hegemony as a practice of ideological resistance against President Xi Jinping’s lockdown policy, with a focus on news articles in Mandarin online mass media, particularly in the New York Times. Free observation and note-taking were utilized to collect data using Fairclough and Gramsci’s critical discourse analysis paradigm. News about protests against the Covid-19 Lockdown Policy yielded 99 speech data. The distribution of data among different forms of resistance suggests that individuals and groups employ diverse strategies to challenge the hegemonic control imposed by the government. There is a configuration that includes the representation of voices that disagree with the lockdown policies, the pointing out of unfairness and inequality, the organizing of protests and rallies, and the criticism and demands of the government. Thus, this research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the dynamics of ideologies in the context of Mandarin mass media. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Irena Y.
