Abstract

This study examined trends, collaboration patterns, and research development in school-based Comprehensive Sexuality Education using a bibliometric approach. Data were retrieved from the Scopus database in May 2025, yielding 1,216 documents published between 1972 and 2025. After a systematic screening process, 261 journal articles were selected for detailed analysis. Bibliometric mapping was conducted using VOSviewer to identify publication trends, journal sources, subject areas, institutional and country contributions, keyword co-occurrence, and author collaborations. The findings indicate a significant increase in CSE publications after 2010, corresponding with global policy developments such as the publication of the UN’s 2009 International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education. Research output is dominated by publications from countries including the USA, the UK, and South Africa, while journals such as Sex Education, BMC Public Health, and The Journal of Adolescent Health serve as key publication outlets. Thematic analysis of keyword co-occurrence reveals a strong focus on adolescent health, HIV prevention, gender, curriculum development, and policy discourse. Despite this growth, gaps persist in cross-cultural perspectives, religion-informed frameworks, and intersectional approaches. By integrating bibliometric mapping with thematic insight analysis, the study highlights the need for inclusive, context-sensitive research and stronger international collaboration to support effective and culturally responsive CSE implementation. © 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
