Empowering students' energy literacy through STEAM-ESD projects in place-based education

Abstract

The energy crisis and low energy literacy among students encourage the need for a contextual and sustainable learning approach. This study aims to examine the potential of the Kali Maron Micro-Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH) as a local context in implementing Place-Based Education (PBE) based on the STEAM-ESD project to improve students' energy literacy. The study used a Pretest-Posttest Control Group design with three groups: control, experiment 1 (PBE), and experiment 2 (PBE based on the STEAM-ESD project). The instruments consisted of cognitive, affective, and behavioral tests and self-assessment. The results showed that the Kali Maron PLTMH has strong potential as a project-based learning context because it provides real learning resources integrated with local energy and sustainability issues. Implementing STEAM-ESD-based PBE significantly improved students' energy literacy in three domains, with the highest affective level. The highest N-Gain and effect size were achieved by experimental class 2, indicating the model's effectiveness in shaping energy-saving knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. Thus, this approach plays a vital role in fostering students' energy awareness and responsibility in the context of the clean energy transition. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
