Abstract

Some food ingredients that are widely used for medicinal purposes are red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor L.) and bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp). It is known that these two foods are types of vegetables that contain many active substances. One of the active substances contained in many of these two foods is a flavonoid. As reported, the compound exhibited antioxidant, antibacterial, and antihyperlipidemic properties. In this study, the antihyperlipidemic activity of red spinach ethanol extract (RSEE), bay leaf ethanol extract (BEE), and their combinations (formulas F1, F2, and F3) was assessed using the lipase inhibition method with a positive control (Xenical). F1 is a mixture of RSEE and BEE (1:1), while formulas F2 and F3 are 1:2 and 2:1 of the two extracts, respectively. The results of the antihyperlipidemic test for RSEE, BEE, F1, F2, F3, and Xenical were 139.83; 187.86; 225.04; 83.49; 136.90; and 20.86 µg/mL, respectively. From this, it can be reported that the highest antihyperlipidemic activity is found in formula F2. It can be expected that F2 has lipase inhibitory activity. © RJPT All right reserved.
