Flexibility is essential to face the rapidly changing times. This study aims to develop an open-ended mathematics task that can enhance students’ strategic flexibility. This research was conducted in two main stages: preparation and evaluation. The preparation stages are formulating indicators, involving the preparation of task grids, and designing tasks. The stages in evaluation are testing the validity and practicality of the task. This study produced a mathematical task instrument that has been validated by experts and is able to reveal indicators of students’ strategic flexibility. Students used various strategies to solve the given problems. The strategies used by students in completing these tasks included making logical deductions, making analogies with simpler numbers, using diagrams, and utilizing the GeoGebra application. Although they were able to verify the correctness of their initial solution, they did not try other different strategies to find a solution. Therefore, this open-ended mathematics task can serve as an effective tool to investigate students’ strategic flexibility. © 2026, Kazan Federal University. All rights reserved.
