Abstract

The main focus of this study is to apply the onto-semiotic approach to analyze the students' understanding of algebra. Six entities of onto semiotic approach as a tool to analyze, there are language, concept, procedure, computation, proportion and argument. It can be the basis for teachers to choose appropriate learning strategies, in order to achieve the objective of learning. This type of research is qualitative descriptive. The subject of this research was three students (8th grade), consist of one student with high mathematical ability, one student with medium mathematical ability, and one student with low mathematical ability. The analysis of the test and interview was conducted based on a given test. The results showed, student with high mathematical ability mastered all entities, but could not give a complete argument of algebraic problem. Student with medium mathematical ability mastered all of them, except language and argument. Student with low mathematical ability mastered procedure and proportion only. So, onto semiotic approach can detail in describe the understanding of student with high, medium, or low mathematical ability of algebra. © 2018 Author(s).
