Abstract

This research is a preliminary study with a purpose to describe and analyze the early year junior high school student scientific literacy level. This research was quantitative descriptive research that used scientific literacy assessment test. The data of student scientific literacy level is gather using a scientific literacy assessment that already developed by using PISA scientific literacy indicators. The scientific literacy assessment consisted of a solar system topic in junior high school. Based on this research data and findings, from 161 students there's 152 students there were still under the average, where they're classified as level 4 and below. There are 20 students at level 4, then 83 students at level 3, and 49 students at level 2. Meanwhile, only 9 students that had above average score which means they're on level 5 or above. Low level students' scientific literacy caused by a various reason. Novelty of this research was to describes and explain each level of early year junior high school student scientific literacy and their performances. This research outcomes hopefully can be usefully for further development of student scientific literacy. © 2026 Author(s).
