Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are a versatile class of silica-based nanomaterials characterized by tunable mesoporous architectures, large surface area, and high cargo-loading capacity, making them attractive platforms for drug delivery systems (DDS). Using the Scopus database, 1,715 publications were retrieved and analyzed with VOSviewer to evaluate publication trends, influential journals, leading authors, institutional contributions, and thematic evolution. The analysis shows sustained global growth, with China, the United States, and Spain as major contributors. Keyword co-occurrence mapping indicates enduring focus on controlled release, surface engineering, and cancer-targeted therapy. Patent analysis via Lens.org identified 121 patents, reflecting rising translational interest and technological progression from early charged-particle designs to advanced systems enabling targeted delivery, blood–brain barrier penetration, immune-mediated transport, and multi-agent encapsulation. Recent patents further highlight scalable manufacturing strategies, signaling movement toward clinical and commercial feasibility. Overall, this study clarifies the intellectual landscape and technological trajectory. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2026.
