Abstract

This study aimed to describe the development and validation of an instrument for assessing Indonesian middle school students’ domain-general critical thinking skills. The development of the instrument was conducted using seven stages, namely defining the construct, determining the format, constructing test items, making a scoring guide, reviewing experts’ opinions, conducting a pilot study, and revising and administrating the instrument. The quality of the instrument was assessed in terms of content validity, internal reliability, item difficulty level, and item discriminability. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected in this study using test and survey methods, respectively. The test was administered to 101 students from a particular middle school in East Java, Indonesia. The results indicated that the developed instrument is valid in terms of the content, with the percentage of agreement between three experts being 80 percent. The finding is also supported by students’ responses to the instrument. Approximately 80 percent of the students gave positive responses on the contents. In addition, the instrument is internally reliable with the Cronbach’s alpha reaching 0.86. The results of the item analysis suggested that 61 percent of the test questions have a moderate level of difficulty and 69 percent of the questions have an accepted level of discrimination. Overall, the findings suggest that the developed instrument can be used to measure Indonesian middle school students’ critical thinking skills. © 2021. All rights reserved.
