Abstract

This study aims to explain the mathematical understanding of junior high school students in the category of interpreting the concept of function in terms of gender differences. This type of research is exploratory research with a qualitative approach where the researcher conducts a thorough and in-depth examination of the subject regarding the category of interpreting. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII consisting of female students and male students who had the same mathematical ability, namely the medium category. Gender grouping in this study used a gender questionnaire adapted from The BEM Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). This research was conducted during the pandemic so it was conducted online using the Google Meet application. Data was collected through interviews based on student answers. This research data is analyzed by time triangulation. Based on the results of data analysis, several conclusions were obtained, namely: 1) female students were able to represent the information provided in three forms, namely: ordered pairs called sequential pair diagrams, arrow diagrams, and Cartesian coordinates called Cartesian diagrams, 2) male students-boys are able to represent the information provided in only one form, namely bar charts, and 3) female students are able to interpret (represent) information correctly, while male students are unable. © 2023 Author(s).
