Vocational schools prepare students to join the workforce with practical skills for specific jobs. However, there is a disparity between vocational schools and the demands of business and industry, and a mismatch between the skills and knowledge acquired by the graduates and the workplace requirements. The purpose of this research is to assess the compatibility of vocational schools in a specific region in Indonesia with regional priority industries. To achieve that data were drawn from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics and derived through interviews. The procedures were as follows: 1) identifying the leading sectors using the location quotient; 2) assessing the compatibility of vocational school development with the priority sector; and 3) determining the elements that contribute to the suitability. The findings confirm the disparity between the growth of vocational schools and regional priority industries. Community interest, existing skills programmes, availability of facilities and infrastructure, practical activities in schools, and collaboration play a role in optimising the growth of vocational high schools with leading industries © 2023 WIETE
