Analysis of Harmonics and Quality of Distribution Networks and Transformers on Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Abstract

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) had a significant role in supporting the popularity and growth of electric vehicles. The rising number of electric vehicles that use EVC has implications for the existing transformers and distribution networks. To assess the impact on transformers and distribution networks, the researcher used the Fluke 1748 tool. The Fluke 1748 is a precision instrument capable of recording and analyzing electrical parameters such as voltage, current, powers, and power factors. The methodology used in this analysis involves strategically placing Fluke 1748 devices at critical points around EVCS, transformers, and distribution networks. The study's findings revealed that, in General, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, voltage and current checks are carried out. The finding showed that 2.2% of Total Harmonic Distortion of voltage (THDv) and 5% of Total Harmonic Distortion of current (THDi) meet the standards of IEEE 2014. The impacts identified from these measurements include losses in kilowatt-hour (kWh) sales due to a voltage drop of 2250 Watts. In addition, significant transformers and conductors experience a dropping of 2.5% voltage from the nominal voltage, which leads to further losses. © 2023 IEEE.
