The effect of learning style on problem solving strategies of prospective mathematics teachers

Abstract

Learning styles are inspired by different people learning information in different ways that are more appropriate and easier to understand. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate whether obtaining information or learning styles affect how a person determines strategies to solve problems. This study aimed to see the effect of prospective mathematics teachers' learning styles on problem-solving strategies. This research was qualitative research with 58 prospective mathematics teachers who participated. The results showed that learning styles affect problem-solving strategies, especially for Visual dominant subjects, Visual-Reflective dominant subjects, Global dominant subjects, Neutral subjects. Visual subjects solved the geometric problem by drawing strategy according to problems or illustrative strategy without logical explanations. When solving non-geometric problems, they have difficulty determining the appropriate strategy. Visual-Reflective subject determined strategy for geometry and the non-geometry problem with logical reasons. According to their learning styles, Global dominant subjects had a unique strategy that was different from other subjects. The strategies of the neutral learning style subjects were a combination of the strategies of the other groups. © 2022 Author(s).
