The Islamic Religious Education (PAI) course is a discipline that holds considerable importance within the higher education curriculum of Indonesia, serving as a significant representation of the national curriculum. This discipline is strategically situated to safeguard students against ideologies such as communism and extremism that are in conflict with Pancasila, the prevailing national ideology of Indonesia. The integration of PAI (Islamic Religious Education) into the curricula of higher education institutions is an approach aimed at promoting religious moderation and national defence (MBBN). The objective of this study is to examine the contents of the PAI curriculum in higher education institutions with the aim of developing a model for MBBN insertion in the curriculum. The study employed a qualitative research approach to gather data. The present study employed a simple random sampling technique. The data were collected through interviews and focus group discussions conducted with PAI lecturers at higher education institutions. Subsequently, a critical and reflective analysis was performed on the obtained data. The findings indicated that the curriculum of the PAI in higher education institutions exhibited a range of standards and competencies. Furthermore, higher education institutions incorporated diverse models of religious moderation and national defence into the PAI curriculum. © 2023, Artseduca. All rights reserved.
