Gender and Analogical Reasoning in Mathematics Problem Solving

Abstract

This research is conducted with a background based on thinking about analogy reasoning in mathematic problem-solving‧ Viewing that this research is descriptive and argumentative within 2 groups of subjects based on gender differences‚ the researcher examines how the process of analogy reasoning in solving problems of the 2 groups of subjects‧ The subjects of this study consisted of two groups of prospective mathematics teacher students‚ 9 male students‚ and 25 female students‧ The subjects have attended mathematics courses for more than 1‚120 hours‧ The researcher analyzed the form of interviews with 2 groups of subjects‧ To descript analogy reasoning‚ the researcher analyzes the participants' performance on problem-solving outcomes based on analogy reasoning indicators: encoding‚ inferring‚ mapping‚ and applying‧ The results of this study show the analogy reasoning in male and female students reflected in problem-solving performance‧ Males are more muscular in identifying and mapping analogical reasoning resulting in problem-solving‧ Male students are more concise in using settlement procedures and accompanied by reasonable arguments‚ while female students are more detailed and procedural in making resolutions‧ Females tend to see the analog of the source problem more as a procedure for solving the target problem‧ The researcher argues that the ability of analogy reasoning can construct performance in mathematics problem-solving‧ © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
