Abstract

Semiotic reasoning is important to assist students in understanding and analyzing signs and symbols, enhance critical and analytical thinking skills. In fact, there are still students experiencing difficulties in defining the relationship between quadrilaterals and limited study on the correlation between cognitive style and semiotic reasoning. 37 students of MTs Nurul Huda Jabon, Sidoarjo were participated in a correlational quantitative research to examine the relationship between cognitive style and semiotic reasoning in explaining the relationship among quadrilaterals. Data were collected through questionnaire using Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire (VVQ) instrument and test method using Semiotic Reasoning Test results (TPS). Twenty questions of cognitive style questionnaire was prepared by researchers to obtain data on cognitive style of students. A question set of semiotic reasoning test was used to measure students' ability to identify quadrilaterals and correlate it. Using SPSS 25.0, the Spearman's rho correlation test were employed to analyzed the data. Statistical analysis showed a correlation coefficient of 0.744 with a significance of 0.00 that implies a positive correlation between verbalizer-visualizer cognitive style and semiotic reasoning in determining the relationship between quadrilaterals. In other words, the greater the value of verbalizer-visualizer owned by students, the greater the value of semiotic reasoning that they will. This research aims to determine the correlation between visual and verbal students into the differences in semiotic representations to understand quadrilateral relations. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
