Abstract

Microstrip antennas with octagonal geometry are promising for wireless communication due to their compact size, low profile, and cost efficiency, attracting interest for 5G. Existing designs are not optimal for internet distribution. This study applies a T-slot-shaped Defected Ground Structure (DGS) on both sides of the octagonal antenna’s ground plane, enhancing current and electromagnetic distribution, increasing bandwidth, improving impedance matching, and reducing signal reflection. Designed in CST Studio Suite and fabricated for 5G, measurements with a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) show minimal deviation from simulations. The T-slot octagonal antenna achieved a working frequency of 3.5 GHz, return loss of -41.72 dB, VSWR of 1.016, gain of 1.385 dB, and bandwidth of 430 MHz, showing improved 5G suitability. © (2024), (International Academy of Microwave and Optical Technology (IAMOT)).
