Integrating project-based learning and video exposé to enhance English language teaching in higher education: a case study of student empowerment

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of project-based learning (PBL) in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching, focusing on the integration of video Exposé as a tool for student empowerment. Conducted at a private junior high school in Surabaya, Indonesia, the research involved 44 students and one English teacher. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through video recordings, field notes, and observations of teaching and learning activities. The findings revealed that the PBL approach, structured into planning, development, and reflection stages. Furthermore, this pedagogical practice promoted students empowerement such as creativity, responsibility, tolerance, open-mindedness, discipline, responsibility and collaboration skills. Key factors contributing to the project’s success include authentic activities, the integration of technology, and teacher scaffolding. To sum up, this study underscored the potential of combining PBL and multimedia tools to create meaningful, student-centered learning experiences and provides practical recommendations for educators to optimize EFL teaching methodologies in similar contexts. © 2025 The Author(s).
