Mapping research on STEAM and SDGs: A bibliometric review of the literature in the last 10 years

Abstract

This bibliometric review examines the literature on STEAM and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from 2014 to 2024. It highlights a significant increase in publications and citations, particularly from 2018 onward, indicating a growing academic interest and practical relevance in integrating STEAM education with the SDGs. The study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis to visualize and map the research landscape and emerging trends related to STEAM and the SDGs. This research provides valuable insights for scholars, educational institutions, teachers, and librarians regarding the future trajectory of scientific creativity research. The methodology follows a five-stage bibliometric approach: defining keywords, retrieving initial search results, refining search outcomes, collecting data, and analyzing the findings. The key results of this study include: 1)The peak of publications on "STEAM" and "SDGs" occurred in 2023, with 25 articles, followed by 12 articles in 2024. 2) The most cited publication on STEAM and the SDGs from 2014 to 2024 is Soltanian (2022), with 85 citations. 3) Spain leads in the number of publications, with 11 documents, while Universiti Teknologi Malaysia has made the highest institutional contribution, producing three articles on this topic. Keyword analysis reveals a strong emphasis on sustainability and educational innovation, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this research field. The review highlights the need for further studies to explore underrepresented regions and assess the practical applications of STEAM in achieving the SDGs.
