This study examines the concept understanding of eighth-grade students on statistics topics based on APOS theory in terms of mathematical ability. Concept understanding refers to the ability to classify or categorize objects. APOS theory suggests that individuals understand mathematical concepts through four stages: Action, Process, Object, and Scheme. This research aims to describe the understanding of statistical concepts, specifically data centering measures, among students with different levels of mathematical ability. This qualitative research employs a descriptive approach to collect and interpret data. The subjects are three eighth-grade students, each representing high, medium, and low mathematical abilities. Data collection methods include concept understanding tests and interviews. The data obtained will be analyzed by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. Results indicate that all three subjects achieved the action stage, calculating data centering measures correctly. At the process stage, high and medium-ability students explained how to determine each measure using their own words, while low-ability students were limited to the median and mode. At the object stage, only high-ability students provided examples of appropriate and inappropriate applications of data centering measures, while medium-ability students were limited to the mode concept. At the schema stage, high-ability students explained the rationale behind using each measure, applied calculations correctly in various situations, and analyzed data to draw conclusions. Medium-ability students' understanding was limited to the mode concept. Based on these findings, it is recommended to create a learning environment that supports the conceptual understanding of data centering measures as representative values. © 2025 Author(s).
