The critical role of communication skills: A novel approach to enhancing problem-solving skill

Abstract

Low mathematical communication skills can hinder students' problem-solving process, especially systems of linear equations in two variables. This research aims to explore and describe students' mathematical communication skills in solving problems related to systems of linear equations in two variables. This research method is a qualitative approach with a case study design. This research was conducted at one of the public junior high schools in Gresik, East Java, and involved 15 grade 8 students who were selected purposefully. Of this number, three students were chosen as representative subjects based on variations in students' mathematical communication abilities. Data was collected through mathematical communication skills tests, document analysis of student work, and interviews. The research results show that students with better mathematical communication (S-1) can correctly manipulate the meaning of questions, create mathematical models, and draw graphs. On the other hand, students with low abilities (S-2 and S-3) need help drawing graphs and basic concepts, which impacts students' ability to solve mathematical problems. Students with high communication ability have a better problem-solving skills than those with low communication ability. This research emphasizes the importance of developing mathematical communication skills in mathematics learning to improve students' problem-solving skills. © 2025 Author(s).
