Abstract

This study investigates the mathematical reasoning abilities of ninth-grade students at a private school in Central Java, emphasizing the influence of social-emotional learning (SEL). Employing a mixed-method approach, the research categorizes students into low, medium, and high ability groups based on their performance in reasoning tasks related to the surface area and volume of cylinders. Findings reveal that 38.10% of students exhibit strong reasoning abilities, while 33.33% demonstrate poor reasoning skills. High-ability students effectively meet all four reasoning indicators, showcasing confidence and systematic problem-solving. In contrast, moderate-ability students show partial understanding and require more guidance, while low-ability students struggle with basic concepts. Qualitative interviews provide deeper insights into these students' thought processes, highlighting the necessity of tailored instructional strategies to enhance mathematical reasoning across all ability levels. Ultimately, the research offers valuable implications for educators aiming to support students' mathematical development. © 2025 Author(s).
