This study aims to describe the mathematical literacy of middle school students in solving cases of context-based statistics with scientific, occupational, and societal contexts in terms of mathematics self-efficacy. The research subjects were ninth-grade students consisting of one student, each with high and low mathematics self-efficacy. This research is qualitative research. Data were collected using a mathematics self-efficacy questionnaire, a mathematical literacy test in statistics problems, and interviews. Data analysis was based on mathematical literacy indicators (formulate, employ, and interpret). The results showed that in the formula indicator, students with high and low mathematics self-efficacy can identify mathematical aspects by determining the information known and asking about the problem well. The employ indicator shows that students with high mathematics self-efficacy can design and apply problem-solving strategies to find solutions to problems well. However, learners with low mathematics self-efficacy cannot design and apply problem-solving strategies to find solutions to problems well. Meanwhile, the interpret indicator shows that students with high and low mathematics self-efficacy can conclude problem solutions logically, provide reasons for the conclusions drawn, and can provide conclusions by the context of the problem given. © 2025 Author(s).
