Exploring the Use of Generative AI in Software Development: A Preliminary Study

Abstract

Generative AI is an innovative technology in the current era of artificial intelligence. Generative AI is used in all fields, including software development. A preliminary study is needed to determine the role, challenges, and future research agenda to determine the research gap in this topic. Based on the results of the preliminary study that has been conducted, 61 related articles were found discussing the implementation of generative AI in software development, the challenges of implementing generative AI in the context of reliability, security, and bias, and future trends in its implementation. Bibliometric analysis has also been conducted to determine keyword co-occurrence for exploring related terms in each cluster. A theoretical systematic literature review was undertaken using articles filtered using the PRISMA framework to answer this study's research question. Based on the results of the preliminary study, it can be seen that the application of Generative AI in software development is very significant and has the potential for further development. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2025.
