Mathematical literacy of junior high school students with socio-cultural context in terms of student's auditory learning style

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the mathematical literacy of junior high school students in a socio-cultural context viewed from an auditory learning style. Mathematical literacy is an individual's ability to formulate, use, interpret, apply, and evaluate problems in everyday life by applying mathematical concepts to solve problems. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were grade IX students of SMP Negeri 1 Perak Jombang with an auditory learning style. The research data were obtained from task-based interviews with three students with high, medium, and low mathematical abilities. Data analysis was carried out based on the mathematical process, including formulating situations mathematically, using mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning, and interpreting, applying, and evaluating mathematical results. The results of this research are the three students: 1) did not write down essential parts related to what was known and what was asked, thus affecting the correctness of the solution; 2) the use of concepts, facts, procedures, and mathematical reasoning was incomplete, did not reflect, and did not evaluate the solution, 3) did not interpret the mathematical results into the context of everyday life. Students with high and medium mathematical abilities chose formulas to find solutions, while subjects with low skills did not. Students with high mathematical abilities made conclusions about the solution, while students with medium and low skills did not. Auditory students can be helped by providing contextual problems that are familiar in their everyday lives. © 2025 Author(s).
