Abstract

This study aims to describe students' abstraction in constructing the relationship between parallelograms and rectangles. The research method is an explorative qualitative research. The subject of this research is one grade VIII student who has studied quadrilateral material. The subject has high ability based on the results of the geometry ability test. In addition, the subject was taken based on the suggestion of the SMP Negeri 3 Pontianak teacher, who was willing to be interviewed. In this study, the researcher only took one subject because the researcher wanted to explore something more deeply related to the subject's abstraction. The instruments used in this study were assignments and interview guidelines. In addition, during the interview, the researcher recorded all subject activities because the researcher observed the gestures used by the subject during the interview. The results showed that the subject used the epistemic action of recognizing, building with, and constructing, known as RBC, to construct the relationship between parallelograms and rectangles. Additionally, the subject uses gestures to understand others easily and herself, boosting confidence. The results of this study also provide recommendations to researchers to conduct a study on the abstraction relationship among other quadrilaterals and to teachers in mathematics learning, especially in teaching the relationship among quadrilaterals, to design learning that includes RBC+C so that learning will be more meaningful. © 2025 Author(s).
